NAIF CEO Visit Marks Infrastructure Investment and Indigenous Participation at Darwin International Airport Precinct

Airport Development Group (ADG) welcomed Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), Neil MacDonald, to the Darwin International Airport precinct late last week, noting the role of NAIF financing and ADG’s Indigenous participation and community engagement across Northern Australia.

Mr MacDonald met with ADG executive Rob Porter and Senior Business Development Specialist, Carly Clarke, undertaking a tour of key NAIF-supported infrastructure projects across the precinct, including works strengthening runway capability, airside infrastructure, and precinct resilience.

Airport Development Group has been a recipient of NAIF financing for major infrastructure upgrades designed to improve aviation reliability, strengthen supply chains, and enhance connectivity between the Northern Territory, the rest of Australia and international markets.

The visit also recognised the recent NAIF reporting noting progress in Indigenous engagement, participation, and community benefit across funded projects, priorities shared by Airport Development Group through its infrastructure delivery program.

NAIF-supported projects at Darwin International Airport Precinct contribute to broader goals of:

increasing Indigenous employment and training opportunities during construction and operations
supporting local and Indigenous businesses through procurement opportunities
strengthening long-term economic participation for Northern Territory communities and
delivering infrastructure that creates lasting social and regional benefits.

NAIF investment has enabled significant infrastructure works across the Darwin International Airport precinct. Royal Australian Navy Delegation Welcomed to Alice Springs Ahead of ANZAC Day Alice Springs, Northern Territory

Alice Springs Airport today hosted a special ceremonial arrival, welcoming a delegation from the Royal Australian Navy to Alice Springs in support of ANZAC Day commemorations.

A contingent of six personnel from HMAS Arunta were formally welcomed by Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation, alongside community representatives including Mayor Asta Hill.

The visit marks a significant reconnection between HMAS Arunta and Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation, organisations that share a longstanding relationship. Members of Lhere Artepe have participated in ship tours over many years, with the last recorded visit by HMAS Arunta personnel to Alice Springs occurring in 2004.

During their stay, the delegation will meet with local leaders, engage with NORFORCE personnel, and participate in community activities leading into ANZAC Day commemorations.

ADG Community Grants Program Supports Veteran Health and Wellbeing Through Reeling Veterans Initiative

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support Reeling Veterans Inc. through the ADG Community Grants Program, reinforcing the importance of recognising and supporting the health and wellbeing needs of Australia’s veterans.

The grant supported Reeling Veterans’ Off Grid project, enabling the organisation to expand its reach into remote and regional locations through enhanced satellite communication capability. The initiative improves safety, connection and access to support services for veterans participating in therapeutic fishing programs across Northern Australia.

Reeling Veterans is a veteran-led mental health charity that uses fishing as an alternative form of therapy, creating safe environments where veterans can reconnect, share lived experiences and strengthen peer support networks.

Through the grant funding, Reeling Veterans installed mobile Starlink communication technology, allowing reliable connectivity during remote outreach programs.

The technology has already supported more than 40 veterans within weeks of implementation, improving communication access, safety outcomes and response times when assistance is required.

President of Reeling Veterans Inc., Michael Hurren, said the partnership enables the organisation to reach veterans who may otherwise struggle to access support.

“Many veterans live or travel in remote areas where connection to services can be challenging. The support from ADG allows us to safely expand our programs and reach more veterans who need connection, understanding and peer support.

This project strengthens our ability to deliver ongoing wellbeing programs and ensures no veteran feels isolated, regardless of where they are.”

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support Acacia Hill School in Alice Springs through the ADG Community Grants Program, helping deliver the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Central Australia Program for students living with disabilities.

The ADG Community Grants Program provides funding to initiatives that strengthen communities across the Northern Territory, supporting education, inclusion, wellbeing, and opportunity.

Through a $2,000 grant, ADG has helped enable Acacia Hill School students to participate in equine-assisted riding sessions delivered by Riding for the Disabled Central Australia. The program supports physical coordination, emotional wellbeing, communication skills, and confidence-building in a safe and inclusive environment.

Acacia Hill School is Central Australia’s only specialist school supporting young people aged 3–18 with intellectual impairment and complex disabilities, with approximately 80 per cent of students identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

The funding has assisted with program delivery costs, including therapeutic riding lessons, specialised equipment, and volunteer-supported training resources, ensuring students can continue accessing one of the school’s most valued learning experiences.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to welcome the newest intake of trainees into the ADG Indigenous Training Academy (ITA), reinforcing its ongoing commitment to creating meaningful employment pathways and supporting Indigenous participation across the aviation and hospitality sectors.

The 2026 intake brings six new trainees into the program, increasing the total number of active participants in the Indigenous Training Academy to 20 trainees, a significant milestone for the program’s continued growth and impact.

The Indigenous Training Academy provides structured training, nationally recognised qualifications, and hands-on workplace experience across multiple operational areas within the Darwin International Airport precinct. The program is designed to build long-term career pathways while strengthening local workforce capability.

The new trainees commenced on Wednesday 8 April, completing their first week with a comprehensive induction program, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification and accredited First Aid training.

As part of the partnership, ADG will present the Comedy & Cabaret event featuring acclaimed Australian comedian Mel Buttle, bringing laughter, glamour and unforgettable entertainment to the festival program.

Held from 26–29 March 2026 in Alice Springs, the fabALICE Festival transforms the heart of Central Australia into a dazzling celebration of drag, cabaret, music, comedy and community.

Inspired by the iconic Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the festival began in 2019 and has grown into a colourful, family‑friendly celebration of diversity and creativity set against the spectacular desert landscape of the Red Centre.

Darwin International Airport today welcomed the announcement by Aero Dili confirming the launch of a new direct air service between Darwin and Dili, further strengthening economic, trade and investment ties between Northern Australia and Timor‑Leste one of Australia’s closest and most important regional partners.

Commencing 24 May 2026, the twice-weekly service will directly connect Darwin and Dili, creating new opportunities for business engagement, investment, government collaboration and regional trade across the Timor Sea.

This new direct service strengthens Darwin’s role as a gateway between Australia and Timor-Leste and creates greater opportunity for business engagement, investment partnerships and economic development across both regions.

Airport Development Group (ADG), together with Airnorth, is proud to recognise International W omen’s Day 2026 through a unique aviation initiative showcasing women delivering aviation operations across Northern Australia.

Earlier today, Airnorth services connecting Darwin–Tennant Creek and Darwin–Cairns highlighted strong female representation across aviation, from the flight deck and cabin crew through to airport operations, safety, customer experience and ground handling teams.

This initiative demonstrates women leading, delivering, and sustaining aviation operations end-to-end while highlighting the essential role regional aviation plays in connecting Central and Northern Australia.

Women played key roles across the airport and airline operations supporting these services, recognising their contribution across frontline, technical, operational and leadership roles throughout the aviation sector.

Sandra de Kock EGM People, Culture and Community with Airport Development Group said the initiative reflects both progress made and responsibility carried forward by women working across aviation.

Airport Development Group, together with Darwin Airport Resorts and China Southern Airlines, was proud to support the Chung Wah Society Chinese New Year Banquet held on Saturday 14 February, celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse.

The evening brought together more than 300 guests for a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and tradition. The banquet was filled with spectacular dance performances, colour, and ceremony, reflecting the rich heritage of the Chinese community in the Northern Territory.

The Chinese community has made an extraordinary contribution to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Northern Territory.

Darwin International Airport Welcomes the Year of the Horse with Vibrant Chinese New Year Celebrations

Darwin International Airport and Darwin Airport Resorts were alive with colour, music, and celebration as the Chung Wah Society delivered a spectacular Lion Dance performance to mark the commencement of Chinese New Year and welcome the Year of the Horse.

The vibrant performance began at Darwin Airport Resorts, where the Lion Dancers made their way through the precinct, engaging guests and ADG team members before concluding with a dynamic finale highlighting the key themes of the year ahead.

Airport Development Group (ADG) Executive General Manager Strategy and Development, Greg Norman , who witnessed the performance at Darwin Airport Resorts, said the celebration was a powerful expression of culture and community.

“It was wonderful to engage with the Chung Wah Society and experience such a colourful and spectacular performance. Events like this reflect the rich cultural fabric of Darwin and the importance of bringing our community together ,” Mr Norman said.

Celebrating Indigenous participation, pathways and strengthened cultural partnerships across the Northern Territory and Northern Australia

Airport Development Group (ADG) today released its Indigenous Engagement Report 2024–25, highlighting another year of significant progress in education, employment, tourism, cultural partnerships, and community investment across the Northern Territory.

The Report showcases the achievements of ADG’s Indigenous Training Academy (ITA), the growth of Indigenous employment across ADG’s airports and resorts, strengthened partnerships with Traditional Owner groups including the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation and Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation, and expanding Indigenous tourism and cultural infrastructure initiatives across Darwin and Alice Springs.

Chair of the Indigenous Advisory Committee, Eddie Fry , said the report reflects meaningful, grounded progress that is reshaping opportunity for Indigenous Territorians.

“Our Indigenous Training Academy is more than just a program — it’s a movement for opportunity, empowerment, and community strength. ADG’s work is creating real pathways for young people who are gaining confidence, skills, and leadership. These efforts are not only changing lives today; they are building long-term capability for communities across Northern Australia.”

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to announce it has been recognised with two major honours at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards 2025, held last week, highlighting a year of achievement for the organisation and the Northern Territory.

ADG received the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Award for its Indigenous Training Academy, a program designed to create meaningful employment pathways, strengthen cultural capability, and support First Nations participation across the ADG workforce.

Sandra de Kock , Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Community, said the recognition reflects the commitment of both the Trainees and the ADG team. “This award is a tribute to our Indigenous trainees, whose dedication, resilience, and pride continue to inspire us all. The Indigenous Training Academy is built on genuine opportunity and cultural respect, and we are honoured to see its impact recognised at a national level.”

In addition, Tennant Creek Airport was named Airport of the Year – Small Regional Airport, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to regional connectivity, sector innovation, and the delivery of an exceptional passenger experience.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for Round 4 of the ADG Community Grants Program, supporting initiatives that strengthen communities.

The ADG Community Grants Program provides funding to not-for-profit organisations, community groups, schools, and sporting clubs for projects and activities that deliver social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits to the regions surrounding Darwin International, Alice Springs, and Tennant Creek airports.

ADG Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Community, Sandra de Kock said the program reflects ADG’s commitment to supporting vibrant and resilient communities throughout the Territory.

Airport Development Group Community Grants Program Supports Lifesaving Education in Schools

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support St John NT’s First Aid in Schools program through its Community Grants Program, helping equip young Territorians with vital lifesaving skills.

The First Aid in Schools initiative introduces preschool and school-aged children to the basics of first aid through engaging, age-appropriate activities such as storytelling, role-playing and interactive demonstrations.

The program helps reduce fear of uniforms, medical equipment, and ambulances, while teaching children the skills and confidence needed to respond in a medical emergency.

Children learn the fundamentals of first aid, including the DRSABCD action plan, wound care, and bite treatment, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to help a loved one, classmate or member of the community.

The program also works closely with the Clontarf and Stars Foundation programs in Darwin schools, offering free first aid training to their students and inspiring the next generation of community leaders to act with care and confidence in an emergency.

ADG’s Community Grants Program supports initiatives that make a real and lasting difference to the wellbeing of Territorians.

Rychelle Vines, ADG Indigenous and Community Projects Manager, said the grant recognises the important role St John NT plays in keeping communities safe.

“ADG’s Community Grants Program supports initiatives that make a real and lasting difference to the wellbeing of Territorians. St John NT’s First Aid in Schools program gives young people the skills and confidence to save lives, and that’s an incredible gift to our community.”

St John NT’s Community Educator, Hayley Sues, said the partnership with ADG enables the organisation to continue delivering the program to schools across the Territory.

“We are grateful for ADG’s support, which helps us reach more young people through the First Aid in Schools program. Learning these essential skills early builds confidence and awareness and we know these lessons can make all the difference in an emergency.”

A vital first aid protocol used by St John’s NT is the DRSABCD action plan, which stands for

Danger: Check for hazards in the environment.
Response: Check for a response from the patient.
Send for help: If there is no response, call for emergency assistance.
Airway: Open the airway if necessary.
Breathing: Check for breathing and manage any life-threatening conditions.
CPR: Start CPR if breathing is not normal.
Defibrillation: apply a defibrillator if available

ADG Community Grant Supports Alice Springs Barbell in Building Strength and Community Through Sport

Airport Development Group’s (ADG) Community Grants Program is proud to support the Alice Springs Barbell , a grassroots initiative introducing Olympic Weightlifting to young people in Central Australia.

The project, led by local coaches and mentors, provides a positive outlet for youth in Alice Springs, teaching strength, focus, and discipline through the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. With an emphasis on inclusion and community connection, the program partners with local Arrernte mentors and operates with cultural respect on Arrernte Country.

Recently, the Alice Springs Barbell achieved national recognition, with their young athletes placing second across two divisions at the Australian Youth and Under 15 Nationals held on Bribie Island in October.

ADG’s support has helped the club establish regular training sessions, host official competitions, and develop pathways for local coaches and referees, ensuring the program’s long-term sustainability in the region.

Airport Development Group reinforces commitment to safety during Airport Safety Week 2025

Airport Development Group (ADG) joined airports across Australia and New Zealand from 13–17 October to celebrate Airport Safety Week 2025, part of National Safe Work Month 2025, reaffirming its commitment to workplace and aviation safety across the Northern Territory and Cairns.

The initiative, led by the Australian Airports Association (AAA) and New Zealand Airports Association (NZ Airports), brings together airport teams, tenants, contractors, and community partners to focus on safety awareness, education, and continuous improvement.

ADG launched the week at Darwin International Airport, with the executive leadership hosting team members and stakeholders to officially commence activities across its airports, including at Alice Springs Airport.

Airport Development Group reinforces commitment to safety during Airport Safety Week 2025

• Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Walk: Teams at Darwin and Alice Springs airports inspected airfield areas to identify and remove debris that could pose a risk to aircraft operations. Alice Springs’ FOD Walk was joined by Alice Springs Town Council CEO Andrew Wilsmore, showcasing the value of local collaboration.

• Snake Handling Awareness Training: ADG team members and a cross section of key stakeholders based at the airports received practical safety guidance for outdoor and airside environments.

• A series of educational sessions and wellbeing initiatives, including webinars on safety culture, emergency management, CPR, fire extinguisher training, and wellbeing workshops.

Key Highlights

“The FOD Walk is an important hands-on reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Melanie Cobbin, Head of Airport Operations at ADG. “Removing hazards like debris protects aircraft and equipment, but it also reinforces our collective accountability for maintaining a safe and operational airfield.”

Tony Edmondstone, ADG CEO, noted: “Airport Safety Week is part of the larger conversation of National WorkSafe Month 2025. It’s about keeping safety front of mind, learning from each other, and ensuring our teams, passengers, and community stay safe every day.”

ADG also welcomed NT WorkSafe CEO Grant Hastie to participate in the Darwin events, acknowledging the importance of industry-wide collaboration in promoting safety.

As part of the national campaign, Airport Development Group (ADG) welcomed Alice Springs Town Council (ASTC) Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Wilsmore to participate in the annual Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Walk, alongside Alice Springs Airport Manager, Tony Schulz.

The FOD Walk is an important activity designed to raise awareness about the potential hazards of debris on airport runways and aprons. Even small objects can pose significant safety risks to aircraft, passengers, and airport personnel. The exercise encourages vigilance among all airport users to identify and remove any foreign objects that could impact safe operations.

ASTC CEO Andrew Wilsmore said it was a privilege to join the airport team and witness the strong safety culture in action. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and it’s inspiring to see the team at Alice Springs Airport leading by example,” Mr Wilsmore said. “Activities like the FOD Walk not only protect aircraft and passengers but also build a shared understanding of the importance of maintaining safe and secure operations for our region.”

Alice Springs Airport Manager, Tony Schulz, said Airport Safety Week provides a valuable opportunity to reinforce safety awareness and teamwork across the airport community.

Airport Development Group (ADG) officially launched Airport Safety Week 2025 yesterday, joining airports across Australia and New Zealand in promoting safety awareness and a shared commitment to a safer aviation industry.

The launch event, held at Darwin International Airport, marked the beginning of a week-long program of safety-focused activities across ADG’s airports in Darwin and Alice Springs. The event coincides with National Safe Work Month, highlighting the importance of safety in every workplace.

ADG was pleased to welcome Grant Hastie, CEO of NT WorkSafe, who participated in the launch and spoke about the importance of safety leadership and collaboration across industries.

“Airport Safety Week is a great reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Mr Hastie said. “Whether you work in aviation, construction, hospitality, or administration, the commitment to go home safe every day is something we all share. It’s encouraging to see Airport Development Group leading by example and creating opportunities for their teams to engage in safety conversations and continuous improvement.”

Throughout the week, staff at ADG airports will take part in a series of events and initiatives designed to raise awareness about workplace safety, including the Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Walk, safety toolbox talks, and interactive training sessions.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support Reeling Veterans Fishing for Therapy through its Community Grants Program, supporting six defence veterans from across Australia the opportunity to connect, heal, and share experiences during a fishing retreat in Darwin.

Reeling Veterans Fishing for Therapy is an initiative that uses fishing as a form of therapy, bringing veterans together to strengthen peer support networks, reduce isolation, and promote positive mental health outcomes.

As part of ADG’s support, Darwin Airport Resorts hosted the veterans, many of whom were visiting Darwin for the first time, with tailored accommodation and hospitality packages showcasing the Top End’s unique tourism offering.

Ark Aid Wildlife Rescue, Darwin: Delivering Veterinary Care and Hope Since 2012

Ark Aid Wildlife Rescue provides professional veterinary diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation to over 800 native animals annually in the Northern Territory.

Their specialist veterinary team delivers trauma care, surgery, imaging, and recovery services, while also training and supporting wildlife carers across the region.

ADG’s donation will directly support diagnostic services, medications, surgical procedures, and ongoing care costs, ensuring native wildlife continues to receive the highest standard of treatment.

Far North Queensland Wildlife Rescue: Supporting Our Native Wildlife for Over 30 Years

Nominated by ADG’s Cairns office, Far North Queensland Wildlife Rescue has been a lifeline for sick, injured, and orphaned native animals for more than three decades.

With a dedicated volunteer network spanning from Mission Beach to Mt Surprise and as far north as Weipa, FNQ Wildlife Rescue cares for thousands of animals each year, including birds, bats, macropods, mammals, and reptiles.

In 2025 alone, 2,307 animals were rescued and rehabilitated through the service. ADG’s donation will be used to purchase essential fauna products and food supplies, ensuring volunteer carers have the resources they need to continue their vital work.

Women’s Safety Services of Central Australia: Creating Safer Futures

In Alice Springs, Women’s Safety Services of Central Australia delivers specialist support for women and children escaping domestic, family, and sexual violence.

The organisation not only provides crisis accommodation and counselling but also works to prevent gendered violence in the region.

ADG’s contribution will support the installation of a new outdoor community kitchen, creating a safe and welcoming space for residents to connect, share meals, and participate in programs that promote wellbeing, confidence, and community engagement.

ADG Indigenous Advisory Committee Visit to Purple House Highlights Life-Changing Work in Remote Communities

The work being done at Purple House goes to the heart of community care and cultural dignity.

Members of the Airport Development Group (ADG) Indigenous Advisory Committee were privileged to visit Purple House in Alice Springs last week as part of ADG’s commitment to community engagement and support for grassroots initiatives making a real difference across the Northern Territory and beyond.

Purple House, an Aboriginal-owned and operated health service, has been a recipient of ADG’s Community Grants Program. Funding from the program supported the installation of Starlink connectivity to enable the expansion of Purple House’s “ Last Look ” project—a powerful initiative providing Indigenous palliative care patients with the opportunity to return to their remote community and Country to spend their final days surrounded by family, culture, and kin.

The “ Last Look ” project is a vital part of culturally appropriate end-of-life care, ensuring that patients are not isolated in urban environments far from home. ADG’s support helped equip Purple House with the essential communications infrastructure to maintain safety and coordination across long-distance travel routes, often through isolated terrain in the NT, SA, and WA.

It reminds us of the importance of being on Country, especially at the end of life. ADG is proud to support initiatives that strengthen cultural connections and improve the quality of life for our remote communities.

Chair of the ADG Indigenous Advisory Committee, Mr. Eddie Fry, described the visit as humbling and inspiring.

Top End Welcomes Nepalese International Cricket Team for the Start of the Top End T20 Series

The Northern Territory has a proud tradition of embracing visiting teams, and today’s joyous arrival perfectly reflects that spirit.

The Top End has rolled out the red carpet for the Nepalese International Cricket Team, who arrived in Darwin last week ahead of the commencement of the 2025 Top End T20 Series.

Touching down at Darwin International Airport, the team was greeted by vibrant and enthusiastic members of the local Nepalese community, one of the fastest growing and most culturally rich communities in the Northern Territory. For many players, this marks not only their first visit to the Top End, but also their first journey outside Nepal.

The warm welcome was more than ceremonial; it was a heartfelt celebration of shared heritage and pride. The Nepalese community in Darwin has long been a vital part of the Territory’s multicultural fabric, and their presence today underscored the deep connections between sport, culture, and community.

The excitement was evident, with the players expressing their anticipation for the tournament, the camaraderie between teams, and the opportunity to connect with the Top End’s Nepalese diaspora.

Alice Springs Welcomes Young Aviator on Epic Journey Around the World

“Byron’s determination, skill, and courage are remarkable, and we are thrilled to welcome him to Alice Springs on such a significant adventure. His story is an inspiration to aspiring aviators everywhere.”

Alice Springs Airport is proud to welcome 15-year-old pilot Byron Waller as he touches down in Central Australia on the first leg of his historic attempt to become the youngest supported pilot to circumnavigate the globe.

Departing Brisbane on Sunday morning, Byron’s first day in the cockpit will see him fly via Roma to Alice Springs before continuing on a journey that will span 45,000 kilometres, 30 countries, and all seven continents over the next two months.

Byron is no stranger to record-breaking flights – at just 14, he became the youngest person to fly around Australia, all while managing a new diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition.

Through this challenge, Byron hopes to inspire other young people living with the illness to dream big and believe no obstacle is insurmountable.

From the moment Byron first took the controls, we knew he was destined for extraordinary things. This journey is the result of years of dedication, training, and belief in himself.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to be a premium sponsor of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) for the first time in 2025, celebrating First Nations culture, storytelling, and creativity.

Held annually on Larrakia Country, DAAF has become a major national event on Australia’s cultural calendar. Now in its 19th year, the Fair showcases the work of more than 1,500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from over 75 Indigenous-owned Art Centres from across the country.

As the gateway to the Top End, we see every day how art and culture enrich our community. This partnership is a meaningful step for ADG in celebrating the stories and contributions of Australia’s First Nations peoples.

DAAF Foundation Chair Nadine Lee opened the 2025 Fair by thanking sponsors for keeping the event free and enabling 100% of all sales to return to community Art Centres.

“Storytelling and art are among the strongest things we have to bring us together,” Ms Lee said. “Each artist comes with their own story and unique way of viewing the world.”

In 2025, the Fair is aiming to exceed the success of 2023, which saw more than $4.4 million in art sales, all of which went directly back to artists and Art Centres. The event also contributed over $11.34 million to the local economy, attracting more than 28,000 visitors to Darwin.

Held over the month of August at the Darwin Convention Centre and online, the Fair brings together emerging and established artists, collectors, and visitors from across Australia and around the world, further cementing Darwin’s reputation as a national hub for Indigenous art.

DAAF Foundation CEO Claire Summers said the continued support from partners like ADG ensures the long-term sustainability of the event and its powerful impact on artists, communities, and audiences.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to celebrate the achievements of nine Indigenous trainees who have successfully completed nationally recognised qualifications through the ADG Indigenous Training Academy. The program provides a unique combination of practical, on-the-job experience across airport operations and Darwin Airport Resorts, alongside formal training.

Delivered in partnership with the Institute of Skills and Training Australia and Saltbush Social Enterprises, and supported by Tanyah Nasir Consulting and Apprenticeships Australia, the program reflects ADG’s commitment to building sustainable employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The program is guided by ADG’s Indigenous Advisory Committee, which ensures a culturally safe and supportive environment for all participants.

The success of this program lies not only in the qualifications earned but, in the confidence, pride, and leadership that each graduate now carries forward. As part of ongoing NAIDOC Week celebrations, Airport Development Group (ADG) today hosted a special NAIDOC Morning Tea with a clear purpose - to build stronger connections between ADG suppliers and Indigenous employment agencies.

The event brought together representatives from 13 local businesses and five Indigenous employment agencies, each of whom shared insights into their organisation’s role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment outcomes.

ADG Manager of the Indigenous and Community Projects, Rychelle Vines , said the event was a valuable opportunity to grow awareness and foster collaboration.

“These moments help break down barriers and build meaningful partnerships that support sustainable employment for Indigenous Australians. It's about listening, learning, and creating pathways that work,” said Ms Vines.

Airport Development Group (ADG) was proud to honour NAIDOC Week 2025 with a special luncheon held earlier this week, celebrating this year’s theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.” The event held Darwin Airport Resort, brought together ADG’s and Darwin Airport Resort’s Indigenous team members alongside 50 invited Indigenous Elders from across the Darwin community. The luncheon celebrated the achievements of past generations, acknowledged the strength of current leaders, and looked forward to the legacy being built by the next generation.

A Welcome to Country was delivered by Larrakia man Brandon Kurnoth, followed by a line-up of inspiring guest speakers including Professor Maryann Bin-Salek, Barbara Nasir, Sue Roman, Helen Fejo-Frith, and Regina Bennett, all respected voices in community leadership, cultural knowledge, and advocacy.

ADG is committed to creating opportunities for cultural connection, storytelling, and capacity building, with a particular focus on supporting Indigenous employment, training, and engagement. “Our NAIDOC luncheon is about recognising the wisdom and leadership of our Elders, while also celebrating the strength and potential of our young Indigenous team members,” said Sandra de Kock , Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Community. “It’s an opportunity for reflection, respect and reconnection, all vital to building a stronger and more inclusive future.”

The event was made even more special by the involvement of the Sisterhood seniors' group, who handcrafted the table decorations over recent weeks. Empowering Indigenous Futures: ADG Indigenous Advisory Committee Meets in Alice Springs

“Our Indigenous Training Academy is more than just a program, it’s a movement for opportunity, empowerment, and community strength,”

Airport Development Group (ADG) proudly hosted our latest Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC) meeting in Alice Springs, bringing together First Nations leaders, ADG representatives, and stakeholders to strengthen ADG’s Indigenous engagement and celebrate the impact of its initiatives.

A key highlight of the day was the progress of the Indigenous Training Academy (ITA), with committee members hearing firsthand about the achievements of trainees across Darwin and Alice Springs. With 16 current trainees and a growing number of graduates now working across ADG, Darwin Airport Resorts, and the broader hospitality sector, the program continues to provide meaningful employment pathways for Indigenous Australians.

“Our Indigenous Training Academy is more than just a program, it’s a movement for opportunity, empowerment, and community strength,” said Eddie Fry, Chair of the Indigenous Advisory Committee. “We are seeing young people grow in confidence, skills, and leadership.” The committee also reflected on a standout community engagement event with the NRL team, the Canberra Raiders, held recently in Darwin. ITA trainees attended a training session and connected with Raiders players, culminating in a exchange of gifts, with the presentation of a signed Indigenous All Stars jersey, symbolising leadership, respect, and shared cultural pride from Canberra Raiders players, Jamal Fogarty and Xavier Savage.

The ADG ITA trainees presented the Canberra Raiders with a print featuring the three stories depicted on ADG’s Larrakia Welcome to Country water tower, Mamilima, created by the late Larrakia artist Anthony Duwun Lee. An insightful presentation was given by Jennifer Howard, Director of Saltbush Enterprises, titled “Building Culturally Safe Service Delivery and Inclusive Employment Models.” Jennifer's insights reinforced the importance of systems change, Indigenous-led solutions, and creating safe workplaces that honour culture and foster long-term participation. “Saltbush’s message was clear, if we are to build strong, inclusive economies, cultural safety must be embedded in everything we do,” said Sandra de Kock , Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Community with ADG. “We are proud to stand alongside organisations like Saltbush to listen, learn and act.”

The IAC meeting reaffirmed ADG’s commitment to genuine partnership, economic inclusion, and cultural integrity across all operations. As ADG looks ahead to NAIDOC Week and future investment in local communities, the energy and leadership shown by the IAC, trainees, and partners will continue to shape a stronger, more connected Northern Australia.

Top End reconnects with the golden coast with direct Jetstar flights

This route provides Territorians with more affordable and direct access to visit family down south improving liveability for Territorians

From the top end to the golden coast, Jetstar’s first direct flight from Darwin will arrive at Gold Coast Airport Friday morning – ushering in a seamless new connection between two of Australia’s most iconic destinations.
Operating four times a week, the new seasonal service is expected to deliver more than 25,000 seats annually, boosting visitation and strengthening ties between the two regions.

Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, the Hon. Robyn Cahill OAM MLA said: “We welcome Jetstar enhancing its connectivity between Darwin and the Gold Coast with its new direct seasonal service now underway.

“This route provides Territorians with more affordable and direct access to visit family down south improving liveability for Territorians.

“We will continue to support the sustainable growth of Territory’s aviation sector for improved airline connectivity, choice and competition.”

Queensland Airports Limited Chief Commercial Officer Adam Rowe said the direct service made it easier than ever for travellers to move between the Northern Territory and Southeast Queensland.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jetstar’s inaugural Darwin service to Gold Coast Airport – a fantastic addition to our growing domestic network.

“This direct route opens up more opportunities for people to reconnect with loved ones, discover unique travel destinations and support the local tourism and hospitality sectors at both ends.

“The direct service also eliminates the need for connecting flights or long, often inconvenient drives up the motorway, making travel easier and more accessible.

“We thank Jetstar for their continued investment in creating more travel choices for Queenslanders and Territorians alike.”

Rob Porter , Executive General Manager Operations, Airport Development Group , welcomed the start of the service and highlighted the importance of collaboration.

“This inaugural flight is an exciting milestone that strengthens access between two of Australia’s most iconic destinations.
“This service is the result of a strong partnership between the Northern Territory Government and Jetstar and reflects our shared commitment to growing sustainable air connectivity and unlocking tourism opportunities for the Top End.
“We’re proud to work together to ensure the Territory is more connected, more accessible, and more visible to the rest of the country.”

Jetstar Executive Manager, Customer Jenn Armor said the route will boost tourism by making travel between Darwin and Gold Coast faster, easier and more affordable.

“We know Australians are eager to travel to places that offer something special. Darwin and the Gold Coast are two incredible cities, each with their own flavour and now they’re just one easy flight apart.
“This new service is about putting two incredible destinations within easier reach. Less time in transit means more time to enjoy your trip — and more money to spend when you get there.
“We’re proud to connect these two amazing regions and thank the Northern Territory Government, Darwin Airport and Gold Coast Airport for their support.”

The service will operate from 26 June 2025 to 24 October 2025 on an Airbus A320 aircraft.

ADG Invests in Future Leaders Through Scholarship Program

Through the scholarship, Lucy and Djamarlia will each receive $5000 per annum in financial support, for up to three years, and both are offered a 4–6 week paid placement with ADG during semester breaks, working alongside teams in engineering, project management, and legal services.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to welcome the first two recipients of its ADG Scholarship Program, a partnership with Charles Darwin University (CDU) that supports Territory students through financial assistance and real-world work experience.

Lucy McDonnell, an engineering student, and Djamarlia Darr-Lade, studying a Bachelor of Laws, have been selected for their academic achievement, passion for the Northern Territory, and commitment to shaping a stronger future for their communities.

Through the scholarship, Lucy and Djamarlia will each receive $5000 per annum in financial support, for up to three years, and both are offered a 4–6 week paid placement with ADG during semester breaks, working alongside teams in engineering, project management, and legal services.

This program is about more than financial assistance, it’s about creating genuine pathways into professional careers right here in the Territory,” said Sandra de Kock , Executive General Manager People, Culture and Community at ADG.

“Lucy and Djamarlia are both outstanding students who bring enthusiasm, purpose, and drive. We arere excited to have them join us and contribute to real-world projects that align with their passions and studies.”

Originally from Adelaide, Lucy McDonald has strong family ties to the construction industry and is passionate about applying her skills in physics, maths, and design to benefit the Territory.

“ I love the Northern Territory and want to help make it a better place,” Lucy said.

“This scholarship means I can gain practical experience in engineering and learn how theory connects with real-world projects. I’m looking forward to working with the ADG team and contributing in a meaningful way.”

Djamarlia Darr-Lade, born in Nhulunbuy and raised in both Nhulunbuy and Darwin, is entering her second year of law. With interests in Native Title, Aboriginal commercial law, and property law, she is driven to use her studies to create positive outcomes for Territory communities.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support Lutheran Care through its Community Grants Program, contributing $2,000 to assist vulnerable families and individuals in Alice Springs.

Lutheran Care has been a trusted advocate for people experiencing hardship for more than 50 years, delivering services across South Australia and, since 2009, in the Northern Territory. The not-for-profit organisation works across 28 remote Aboriginal communities in Central Australia, offe ring programs that foster dignity, skills-building, and community connection.

The ADG Community Grant will enable Lutheran Care to continue delivering vital services through its Emergency Relief program, which provides essentials like food, clothing, and vouchers. Clients are also linked with long-term support such as financial counselling, no-interest loans, and wellbeing services through its partnership with Good Shepherd.
Brooke DuBois, Communications Coordinator at Lutheran Care, said the grant will make a real difference for people doing it tough.

“With demand for our services surging at never-before-seen levels, support from corporate partners such as ADG has never been more important. The $2,000 grant will allow desperate families and individuals to access emergency relief and be supported to take steps toward the life they would like for themselves and their families,” Ms DuBois said.

The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Congress 2025, Australia’s premier planning event, was held in Darwin 28-30 May 2025 and a major highlight was the focus on the vital role of First Nations knowledge in shaping sustainable and inclusive futures. Airport Development Group (ADG) proudly partnered with Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation (LNAC) to showcase our signature environmental and cultural initiative, the Gurambai Cultural Trail.

One of the Congress themes, First Nations Knowledge and Planning, recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s first planners. It highlights the importance of integrating traditional knowledge and perspectives into modern planning systems to foster respect for Country, culture, and sustainable land management. ADG and Larrakia Nation’s collaboration on the Gurambai Cultural Trail exemplifies this vision.

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to announce that Darwin International Airport (DIA) has received a Silver Award in the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) Green Airports Recognition 2025, under the category of airports handling fewer than 6 million passengers annually. This is ADG’s third Green Airports Award in four years (2022, 2024 & 2025).

The theme for the 2025 award is Sustainable Energy at Airports, spotlighting the aviation sector’s continued efforts to reduce carbon emissions and lead the transition to clean energy sources.

Darwin International Airport has demonstrated long-term leadership in sustainable energy through a suite of strategic projects and infrastructure upgrades, including:

First installed a 4MW solar array in 2016, which was then the largest airside solar PV installation globally.
Expanded to 7.6MW of solar generation capacity across ground-mounted and rooftop arrays by 2025.
Completed extensive upgrades to its high-voltage network, enhancing safety and reliability of energy infrastructure.
Converted the majority of lighting across the terminal, apron, and airport streets to LED for greater efficiency.
Introduced two electric fleet vehicles to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Invested over $7.5 million AUD in 2024 in a new terminal chiller system, improving cooling efficiency by over 40% and cutting annual carbon emissions by approximately 950 tonnes.

Today marks a milestone for Alice Springs and Far North Queensland as Airnorth’s inaugural direct flight between Alice Springs and Cairns becomes a reality, opening up exciting opportunities for tourism, business, and investment.

The new service, operating three times per week, is touching down in Alice Springs this afternoon. This service strengthens links between two of Australia’s most iconic regions, offering more than 30,000 seats annually and enhancing domestic and international itineraries.

Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill welcomed today’s inaugural flight and highlighted its economic and tourism potential. “This new service is a game-changer for Central Australia, providing greater access for visitors, businesses, and investors. Improved air connectivity is key to unlocking opportunities across tourism, trade, and regional development,” said Minister Cahill. “This route will attract more visitors to the Northern Territory while also supporting business and industry growth. It’s a fantastic outcome for both regions.”

Tourism Central Australia Chair, Patrick Bedford said:

“On behalf of the tourism operators of Central Australia, we welcome the new Airnorth connection between Alice Springs and Cairns.

“Improved air access is critical to the success of our region, and this new route will provide greater opportunities to attract visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen the tourism economy across the Red Centre.

“We thank Airnorth and the Northern Territory Government for their commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.”

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said Airnorth’s new service would entice more visitors to both Cairns and Alice Springs and encourage longer stays in each region. “Each destination offers unique attractions and rich cultural experiences, so tourists are usually keen to visit both regions while they’re here,” said Mr Barker. “ This new, direct service will streamline their journey and prevent additional stops in capital city airports, which means more time for exploring the beauty of Tropical North Queensland and Alice Springs.”

Promotional sales fares start from $299* one way between Alice Springs and Cairns. Airnorth will operate the Cairns to Alice Springs service on its 100-seat E190 aircraft, delivering an additional 30,000 seats annually between these key destinations.

Future-Proofing the Barkly: Airport Development Group Unveils Concept plan for Tennant Creek Aviation and Accommodation Hub

"Aviation is the backbone of regional Australia. Upgrading this infrastructure is not just about aircraft—it’s about unlocking access to opportunity. It means faster, safer connections for people, services, freight, and investment."

Airport Development Group (ADG) recognises the strategic importance of the Barkly region; in particular the vast energy resources of the Beetaloo, the current and future development of critical minerals and rare earths, and the potential need for a logistics hub to support Northern Australia’s Defence requirements.

As such, ADG has today released the draft Tennant Creek Aviation and Accommodation Hub concept plan for community consultation. This concept plan has been developed together with key industry participants and seeks to provide a long-term solution to the growing aviation and logistics needs of the Barkly.

As energy and resource activity accelerates across the Barkly, Tennant Creek is fast emerging as a critical strategic hub—not only for the Northern Territory, but for the nation. ADG’s Tennant Creek Aviation and Accommodation Precinct Plan outlines a staged $30-35 million infrastructure upgrade, designed to unlock long-term growth, improve air connectivity, and meet the evolving needs of government, industry, and business.

Key elements of the precinct include:

Extending and strengthening the runway to enable regular jet operations, improve capacity, and boost safety.
Extending and upgrading of the airport apron to support rotary and fixed wing operations connecting directly from Tennant Creek to mining or energy extraction operations.
Upgrades to terminal and car park facilities, enhanced signage, and modernised electrical systems to improve the overall passenger experience.
Development of a dedicated Essential Key Worker Accommodation Precinct, delivering high-quality, fit-for-purpose housing for up to 100 personnel supporting government, Defence, and industry operations in the region.

ADG CEO Tony Edmondstone said the project represents a crucial step in future-proofing the Barkly and ensuring Tennant Creek becomes a high-performance regional centre for aviation, logistics and services.

“This precinct will be transformative for the Barkly,” Mr Edmondstone said. “It will support the creation of jobs, improve liveability, and strengthen regional connectivity—ultimately driving down the cost of travel and enabling industries and communities to thrive.”

“ Aviation is the backbone of regional Australia. Upgrading this infrastructure is not just about aircraft—it’s about unlocking access to opportunity. It means being able to support the critical workforce needed to power key sectors including energy, mining, health, education, and Defence.”

To help realise this vision, ADG has initiated a Barkly Region Roundtable, scheduled to be held in late April / early May, to enable Government, Industry and the community to provide input into the concept plan.

Currently, Tennant Creek Airport services is a mix of medical, government, tourism, and charter flights. Although fit for purpose today, the current Airport infrastructure is insufficient to support the significant growth expected in the Barkly.

ADG’s proposal addresses these constraints and enables long-term scalability—supporting growth of up to 100,000 passengers annually.

The planned Essential Key Worker Accommodation Precinct directly responds to the region’s short- to medium-term housing shortage. Already generating strong interest from government and Defence agencies, the precinct proposes to offer secure, modern accommodation for staff working in the Barkly’s most critical roles.

Importantly, the project is supported by the Barkly Regional Council, Northern Territory Government agencies, and local stakeholders, who see this as a pivotal enabler of economic resilience and social equity for the region.

“The Barkly is rich in resources and renewable energy potential, and this precinct will be central to unlocking those assets for the nation’s benefit.” Mr Edmondstone said.

The Airport Development Group’s (ADG) Indigenous Training Academy (ITA) participated in a unique community engagement event with the Canberra Raiders, showcasing the power of sport to inspire, unite, and build future leaders.

Held at TIO Stadium in Darwin, the event provided ADG’s ITA trainees with a special opportunity to attend a Canberra Raiders training session, followed by a photo opportunity with the players.

The day celebrated connection, culture, and opportunity, culminating in the presentation of a signed Raiders Indigenous jersey to the Indigenous trainees by Raiders players Xavier Savage, and Sebastian Kris.

After the training session, the group met the players, shared stories, and exchanged gifts.

With over 900 aviation professionals in attendance and more than 3,000 meetings scheduled, the event provided a vital platform to enhance the Northern Territory’s visibility and promote new air service opportunities. AirAsia Malaysia is set to expand its Australian network with the launch of a new direct service from Kuala Lumpur to Darwin, commencing 27 June 2025. Two trainees from the Airport Development Group’s (ADG) Indigenous Training Academy, Tia Graham and Taylah Besic , took centre stage last week as panellists at the Aboriginal Tourism Forum, part of the NT Tourism event.

The forum provided an opportunity for emerging Indigenous tourism professionals to share their experiences and inspire others to explore career pathways in the industry. Both Tia and Taylah highlighted the valuable opportunities ADG has provided through the Indigenous Training Academy, helping them develop new skills, gain industry exposure, and connect with mentors. Samantha Watkins , Indigenous Training Academy Manager at ADG, highlighted the program's impact,

Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to support Darwin Men’s Shed (DMS) through our Community Grants Program, providing a $2,000 grant to enhance their workshop and community programs.

This funding has enabled the group to purchase a new dust extractor for their shed and support their We Fix It program, which assists locals with repairs or assembly of items. Darwin Men’s Shed is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting men’s health, wellbeing and social inclusion by providing a space for members to connect, collaborate and work on meaningful projects.

The DMS We Fix It Program is a fantastic initiative that allows community members to bring in items for repair or assembly. Sandra de Kock , ADG’s Executive General Manager – People, Culture & Community, said ADG is proud to support community organisations that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. "The Darwin Men’s Shed is a wonderful example of grassroots community support, creating a welcoming space where men can connect, share skills, and contribute to their community.” “DMS We Fix It Program is a great initiative that helps locals while fostering social engagement and inclusion. ADG is committed to supporting organisations that strengthen the Northern Territory, and we’re delighted to play a small part in the great work being done at Darwin Men’s Shed."

Currently based in Coconut Grove, Darwin Men’s Shed is in the process of developing a new permanent facility, ensuring they can continue their invaluable work for years to come. They are also seeking support for their Mums on Bikes initiative, which refurbishes and donates children's bikes to remote communities in Nhulunbuy. Brian Harvey, President of Darwin Men’s Shed said the ADG Community Grant has helped them continue their mission to support men and the wider community. Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to announce the 2025 cohort of trainees participating in the Indigenous Training Academy (ITA) program. Seven participants from the Northern Territory will embark on a transformative journey through the ITA, with traineeships in hospitality, and business.

The ITA program aims to inspire and empower the next generation of Territorians by providing hands-on training and career pathways in key sectors. With a focus on skill development, cultural exchange, and real-world experience, the program is designed to set participants up for long-term success in the workforce.

Samantha Watkins , Indigenous Training Academy Manager, said: “The ITA is about more than just training – it’s about igniting a sense of possibility and pride in the future of young Territorians. Our participants are not only gaining skills and qualifications, but they are also being inspired to realise their full potential. The Northern Territory opens up with Jetstar announcing new Darwin to Gold Coast route

Airport Development Group is thrilled to support Jetstar’s new Darwin to Gold Coast route which has been made possible with the support of the Northern Territory Government’s Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme (TAAS). Jetstar will operate four direct flights per week on its Airbus A320 aircraft, with the inaugural flight being 26 June 2025. Ticket sales with one-way sale fares available from $109^ will go on sale from midday ACST (1.30pm AEDT) on Thursday 6 February 2025, at www.jetstar.com

Direct services between Darwin and Bali will commence 22 March 2025 with three direct flights per week, offering a world of great value travel across Asia and beyond.

Indonesia AirAsia is set to reconnect the Northern Territory with Asia, resuming three direct flights per week between Darwin and Bali from 22 March 2025. Tickets are on sale now, with fares starting from just AUD $189.

The new services will bring over 1,000 visitor seats weekly through Darwin International Airport and Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, providing a significant boost to tourism and the local economy. These flights also open seamless and affordable connectivity to and from Darwin via Bali, making travel to other Asian destinations more accessible than ever.

Indonesia AirAsia CEO Veranita Yosephine said the airline is thrilled to return to the Territory bringing more value and choice for consumers in the Top End of Australia.

“Bali is now our largest hub in terms of flight capacity, driven by strong demand. These direct flights will cater to the enduring popularity of Bali as a destination for Australians and offer great low fare connections to over 130 destinations across the AirAsia Group network,” Veranita said.

“The lessons learned from Cyclone Tracy have not only shaped Darwin International Airport’s approach but also informed broader disaster management strategies across Australia.”

Throughout this month we have paused to remember a defining moment in Darwin’s history—the devastation of Cyclone Tracy, which struck in the early hours on Christmas Day in 1974. This catastrophic event left an indelible mark on the city, claiming 71 lives, injuring over 600 people, and destroying nearly 80% of the community.

Amidst the tragedy, Darwin International Airport emerged as a beacon of hope, becoming the heart of one of the largest airlift operations in Australian history. Over five days, more than 25,500 people, primarily women and children, were evacuated to safety aboard civilian and military aircraft.

Among the remarkable efforts, QANTAS set a record by carrying 697 people on a single Boeing 747 flight, including 647 passengers and 23 crew members. Simultaneously, relief flights brought essential supplies, medical aid, and rescue teams to the devastated city.

To commemorate the 50 ^th anniversary of this pivotal event, Airport Development Group, in partnership with local film studio Global Headquarters, has released a compelling short documentary titled More Than Just Being There. The documentary was previewed at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to invited guests.

More Than Just Being There shares personal stories from residents and highlights Darwin International Airport’s critical role in supporting the city’s recovery and reconnecting families.

Airport Development Group CEO Tony Edmondstone explained that Darwin Airport became a vital lifeline after Cyclone Tracy.

“This documentary honours the lives lost, the resilience of survivors, and the extraordinary efforts of those who came together in a time of immense need,” he said.

“It’s a tribute to the courage and determination that rebuilt a stronger Darwin.”

The documentary underscores the importance of airports as critical hubs during disasters, uniting communities and providing essential support when it is needed most. In the wake of Cyclone Tracy, Darwin International Airport evolved its disaster preparedness capabilities, implementing advanced communication systems, forging partnerships with emergency services, and conducting regular emergency response exercises.

“The terminal became more than just a place for departures and arrivals—it was a lifeline for a city in turmoil,” Mr. Edmondstone added.

“The lessons learned from Cyclone Tracy have not only shaped Darwin International Airport’s approach but also informed broader disaster management strategies across Australia.”

After a year of dedicated work, Airport Development Group (ADG) is proud to announce the completion of the Eastern Chillers Project, featuring the installation of two energy-efficient 2400KW water-cooled chillers.

This project represents a major advancement in the company’s commitment to Net Zero by 2030.

Airport Development Group has welcomed the recent announcement by Qantas connecting the Northern Territory to Asia. From March 2025, QantasLink's latest Airbus A220 aircraft will commence flying between Darwin and Singapore, offering Territorians greater access to both international and domestic travel. This next-generation aircraft will provide over 70,000 seats annually on the route and opens new possibilities for connecting the Top End to Asia and beyond.

National Safety Month is an initiative of Safe Work Australia , the national policy agency responsible for WHS and workers' compensation arrangements in Australia. Since 2009, Safe Work Australia has run this campaign each October to raise awareness of WHS and provide resources for workplaces across the country.

This partnership not only fosters cross-organisational peer learning but also included sharing the experience with the Indigenous Youth Mobility Pathway (IYMP), who are also providing critical opportunities for young Indigenous trainees to work alongside CareFlight and gain hands-on experience in aviation and rescue operations.

At Airport Development Group, we are proud to recognise the achievements of our Indigenous trainees who have successfully completed their studies. Through our Indigenous Training Academy, we’ve supported and strengthened the connection of young Indigenous Territorians for three years, and today we celebrate their success.

We commend Bryce Mckerlie for completing his Certificate IV in Information Technology (IT). Bryce has now commenced his Certificate in Networking, an area of growing importance for our corporate operations. We also congratulate Trea Gannon, who has successfully finished the first year of his electrical apprenticeship. Both Bryce and Trea have shown incredible dedication to balancing their studies with the responsibilities of young families; displaying commitment, discipline, and ambition.

Airport Development Group hosts the AAA Safety and Emergency Management Forum in Alice Springs

The annual forum brought together 38 industry delegates from across Australia and internationally to discuss, collaborate, and share experiences in aviation safety and emergency management.

One of the highlights of the forum was a presentation by the Australian Federal Police on their aviation coordination and strategy through the newly established Aviation Strategic Centre.

The culmination of the two-day event was the Alice Springs Airport emergency exercise. This type of exercise is a legislative requirement which is undertaken every two years. The emergency exercise is designed to ensure that all agencies, including air traffic control, aviation rescue, firefighting services, government agencies, and medical responders, are well-coordinated and prepared for real-life emergencies.

Rob Porter , ADG Executive General Manager Operations , said, “The emergency exercise is essential for identifying any gaps in our Emergency Plan, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and improving inter-agency coordination. It also creates greater awareness and helps ensure that everyone involved is competent in their response to emergencies.

“Our aerodrome’s safety is paramount. Ensuring the safety of all people who pass through the airport is our top priority, and it’s vital that we regularly test our plans and readiness for any kind of aviation emergency.”

“We’re thankful to the Airport Development Group for hosting this important forum that enhances Australia’s aviation safety knowledge,” AAA Chief Operating Officer Adrian Plumb said.

Airport Development Group (ADG) was honoured to participate in the 2024 First Nations Land and Water Management Forum, held earlier this week in Darwin. The event welcomed 640 delegates from across Australia and focused on the theme of "Healthy Country, Healthy Water, Healthy Communities." The forum provided Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) providers the chance to strengthen connections, share knowledge, and develop skills vital for the preservation and enhancement of Australia’s natural and cultural heritage.

As part of the event, delegates toured the Gurambai Cultural Trail, guided by the Larrakia Land & Sea Rangers. This immersive experience highlighted the fruitful partnership between ADG and Larrakia Nation, offering insights into the rich cultural heritage and the deep connection to the land that the Traditional Owners share. The trail fosters an appreciation for preserving these cultural landscapes.

Ms. Sandra De Kock, Executive General Manager, People, Culture, and Community, commented, "ADG's commitment to Indigenous culture is reflected in initiatives such as the Hotel Villa Naming Project, the murals and artworks at Darwin Airport Resorts (DAR), and our Indigenous Training Academy. David Kurnoth, Cultural Liaison Officer for Larrakia Nation, also reflected on the partnership: "The collaboration between ADG and the Larrakia Nation is a powerful example of what can be achieved when businesses and First Nations communities work in harmony. The Gurambai Trail not only celebrates Indigenous cultural heritage but also promotes sustainable tourism and education, ensuring these valuable lessons are passed down to future generations."

"Our community is committed to working not only with ADG but with the government to co-manage our resources. We have the capacity and willingness to make this a reality, and through the development of our Tourism Plan, the Larrakia Rangers will take visitors on guided tours of the region—one way to celebrate and acknowledge our heritage," Kurnoth added.

This year’s forum also highlights the Australian Government’s commitment to the Indigenous Rangers Program, which aims to double the number of Indigenous rangers by 2030 and establish 10 new Indigenous Protected Areas. Airport Development Group (ADG) recently hosted the annual in-person meeting of the Australasian Inter-Airport Safety Forum at the Darwin Airport Resorts. Over the course of two days, delegates from 11 airports across Australia and New Zealand came together to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and tackle critical topics, including airside safety, benchmarking, management structures, and critical risk control management.

The annual forum, which is a significant event for Airport safety specialists, places a strong emphasis on operational safety, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the well-being of all who interact with airport environments—ranging from airport staff and contractors to travellers. Attendees exchanged best practices and strategies aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of everyone within airport facilities.

A notable highlight of the forum was the presentation of ADG’s Indigenous Engagement Strategy, along with a guided tour of the Gurambai Cultural Trail. This tour, led by ADG’s Indigenous and Community Project Manager, Rychelle Vines, in collaboration with Larrakia Nation cultural liaison manager and Larrakia Land and Sea Ranger representatives, provided delegates with an immersive experience and a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of the Larrakia Nation's connection to the land. The partnership between ADG and the Larrakia Nation exemplifies the importance of working together to celebrate cultural heritage and foster mutual respect.

“Safety and well-being are fundamental aspects of airport operations. Through this forum, our delegates not only gain new insights and connect with their peers, but they also get to experience the unique offerings of Darwin,” added Ms. De Kock.

A key outcome of the forum was the in-principal agreement to develop a series of universally applicable templates for health, safety, and well-being at airports. These templates will be designed to address both operational-level safety and the safety of those using the airport.

"The sharing of ideas and achieving consensus on such a critical aspect of our business was a major outcome of the two days. There was a strong willingness from all participants to pursue a more efficient , consistent, and effective approach to capturing and resolving safety issues,” said Ms. De Kock.

Inaugural Airport Carbon Accreditation – Darwin International Airport one step closer to achieving Net Zero by 2030

The Airport Development Group (ADG) has been recognised by the Airports International Council Asia-Pacific & Middle East in meeting all the necessary requirements to join the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program directly at Level 3 – Optimisation for Darwin International Airport (DIA).

This international recognition is part of ADG’s commitment to Net Zero emissions (Scope 1 & 2) by 2030. This is the first time that DIA has participated in this international program. The process to accreditation taking 12 months; demonstrating the airport’s commitment to reducing emissions; making a significant investment in onsite renewable generation through the installation of large roof mounted and ground mounted solar farms, terminal and apron LED lighting upgrades, and integration of hybrid vehicles into its fleet with two electric vehicles. DIA is one of 16 accredited airports across Australia and currently the only one in the Northern Territory; internationally there are 575 accredited airports that have pursued the Airport Carbon Accreditation program; demonstrating carbon management practices and strategic initiatives to address climate change. ADG is committed to training, awareness, and pathways to communicate the various activities implemented by the business to reduce carbon emissions.

“We have made a conscious decision to actively focus our efforts on reducing our carbon footprint; communicate effectively and engage with our key stakeholders across the business”, said Sandra De Kock, Executive General Manager – People, Culture and Community Ms De Kock went onto say “ADG recognises stakeholder engagement is a critical component of delivering meaningful emissions reductions across the aviation industry, and in doing so, we have worked closely with our stakeholders and customers, focussing on three key areas – aviation, ground transport and the built environment”.

To reach Level 3 of the internationally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation program, ADG were required to expand the scope of their carbon footprint assessment to understand emissions that are a consequence of the activities of DIA but occur from sources owned or controlled by other entities including aircraft related emissions, ground transport and retail and property tenancy emissions such as electricity, gas, and fuel use. A number of Scope 3 emissions sources considered to be within the “operational control” of an airport operator under the ACA program include corporate travel, ground transport and construction fuel consumption.

ADG remains committed to managing its carbon emissions and will continue to invest in initiatives that reduce its carbon footprint.

The Airport Development Group (ADG) hosted a two-day inter-airport environment forum that saw 17 airports from across Australia and New Zealand represented in person and online participating in the various sessions.

The Airport Development Group (ADG) hosted a two-day inter-airport environment forum that saw 17 airports from across Australia and New Zealand represented in person and online participating in the various sessions.

A highlight for those that attended in person was to participate and experience the Gurambai Cultural Trail (also known as Rapid Creek); being led by the Larrakia Nation Rangers.

Larrakia Nation’s Host Manager David Kurnoth spoke to the group on the cultural significance of the project, as well as the environmental impact and educational opportunities. ADG is proud to collaborate on such a project with the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation; showcasing their stories; whilst maintaining our responsibility to country and the education of our youth.

With the significant investment by several key stakeholders, The Gurambai Cultural Trail provides improvements to the amenity, safety, accessibility and useability of the previously degraded track, whilst creating an opportunity to honour the cultural significance of the area.

“The chance to collaborate on such a project has provided Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation an opportunity to showcase our stories as we work towards future opportunities while maintaining our responsibility to country and the education of our youth.” said David Kurnoth Also attending the Gurambai Cultural Trail walk was the Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling OAM MP. Mr Gosling recognised ADG on its recent achievement at the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia Pacific and Middle East Green Airports recognition Awards for the Gold Award in the }8mppa (less than 8 million passengers per annum).

He said the partnership between ADG, the Larrakia Nation and Rangers and Rapid Creek Landcare to significantly enhance Rapid Creek Conservation Reserve is something all Territorians should be proud of and demonstrates the collective commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and cultural preservation. The partnership has improved accessible pathways, cultural signage, seating areas as well as planting 372 native saplings to improve biodiversity. This two-day forum also gave ADG the opportunity to showcase the Darwin International Airport Resort and recognition of those Territorians that have played a significant role in contributing to making the Territory what it is today. As part of this recognition and with the upgrade of the Resort, delegates to the Forum had a tour of one of the 14 Hotel Pool Villa that have been dedicated to those trailblazers across the Territory. We are thrilled to announce that we have received the Gold Award in the <8mppa (Less than 8 million passengers per annum) category at the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Green Airports Recognition Awards for our Gurambai Cultural Trail!

In collaboration with the Larrakia Nation, our upgrades at Darwin International Airport have significantly enhanced the Rapid Creek Conservation Reserve. Key improvements include accessible pathways, cultural signage, seating areas, a presentation stage, and improved water access. ADG Investing to Transform Darwin International Airport Terminal

Airport Development Group (ADG) is investing more than $11m to transform the Darwin International Airport terminal.

The planned transformation will touch nearly every aspect of the terminal, including an expanded terminal footprint, new common use check in kiosks and bag drop facilities, major renovations to all food and beverage outlets, expanded security screening and covered car parking.

The first phase will commence on Monday 22 May, with ten new check-in kiosks and six auto bag drop facilities coming online. Check in counters will remain open during this time. Coinciding with this, new light weight luggage trolleys will be replacing existing trolleys that are at end of life. The new trolleys will be easier to manoeuvre and cost $4 per use.

Phase two of the upgrade will commence late in May and see all remaining kiosks and bag drop facilities gradually come online, with a corresponding reduction in the number of check-in counters.

ADG and airline partners will provide personnel to assist passengers through the new check in and bag drop process during busy periods.Renovation and expansion of all food and beverage and news and gifts outlets in the terminal have commenced and all upgrades are expected to be completed by December 2024.

Rob Porter, Airport Development Group’s Executive General Manager Operations, said ADG’s focus is to improve passenger experience.

“The tourism industry is a significant contributor to the Territory economy and this significant investment by ADG to upgrade our terminal will support the future growth of this important industry.”

“We do anticipate some delays and inconvenience over the next few months, and we encourage departing passengers to arrive at the airport early and allow time to move through the new check in and bag drop process.”

“Once works are completed our terminal will provide passengers and airport users with a first-class customer experience.”“We apologise for any disruption and thank the travelling public for their patience during this time.”

DIA terminal upgrade

Work is underway to upgrade Darwin International Airport’s terminal.

This significant investment will nearly double the check-in area, and provide 30 self-service check-in kiosks and 23 bag drop facilities.

In an Australian first passengers will be able to check-in with their airline from any kiosk, providing convenience and reducing wait time in queues.

Works are expected to be completed by April 2023.

Airport Development Group (ADG) in conjunction with the Mercure Darwin Airport Resort held a moving event to announce the completion of 8 new Pool Villas and recognise the significant contribution of 8 Territorians, by naming the Villas in their honour. The story of each Honouree is displayed in the Villa dedicated to them. A smoking ceremony held to recognise to the Traditional Owners of the land, the Larrakia, was led by Cain, a trainee with ADG’s Indigenous Training Academy.

The event was attended by Honourees and their families, many of whom had travelled from across the Territory to be there.

Training Academy

Applications are now open for Airport Development Group’s Indigenous Training Academy.

The Academy was established in 2022 at ADG’s Mercure and Novotel Hotel Resort complex and offers nationally recognised qualifications. A 12-month program is offered, with trainees having a maximum 24 months to complete the qualification. The program includes 6 hours of training and a minimum 20 hours per week work at the hotels.

Mentoring is provided as part of the training.

The ‘Darwin Digeridoo’ won an Australian Street Art Silver Awards

The ‘Darwin Digeridoo’, has been awarded a silver in the prestigious Australian Street Art Awards , in the ‘Entrance Art’ category.

The former 41 meter water tower has been transformed into a cultural landmark representing Larrakia dreamtime stories.
Larrakia artist Tony Duwan Lee’s dreamtime stories were painted on the tower over a two week period.

The Darwin Digeridoo stands at the entry to the Mercure Darwin Airport Resort adjacent to Darwin International Airport, and Airport Development Group has plans to add lighting and audio.

World-class resort takes shape

The Northern Territory's tourism industry is being given a massive boost by the creation of a world-class resort next to Darwin International Airport.

A second substantial investment into the project has been confirmed by Airport Development Group (ADG), the go-ahead company that ultimately owns Darwin, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek airports.

Darwin International Airport new resort

Airport Development Group is on track to create a world class destination resort adjacent to Darwin International Airport, with a further substantial investment confirmed for stage 2.

Redevelopment of the two major hotels acquired in early 2021 has already transformed some accommodation at the property, with bespoke villas and luxury family accommodation now available. Plans for the second stage of the redevelopment have been finalised and include a stunning lagoon pool and children’s play area, bars, restaurants, and conference facilities, all complemented by extensive tropical landscaping.

A Recreation Vehicle (RV) park is also included.

Once complete the resort will offer a wide range of accommodation, conference and leisure options, conveniently located adjacent to the airport and close to the city whilst providing a base from which to explore all the attractions the Top End offers. The resort is expected to be completed in mid-2023.

A 10-year partnership agreement between Airport Development Group (ADG) and SSP will bring exciting new food and beverage offerings to both Darwin International Airport (DIA) and Alice Springs Airport (ASA) from 1 July, 2022. The new partnership will see a staged transformation of the terminal food and beverage outlets.

SSP is a leading food and beverage operator in travel locations worldwide, a trusted and well-known partner at major airports around Australia including Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, and Perth airports. Executive General Manager Property & Terminal, Ross Baynes says he is excited about the partnership and what it will deliver for customers. “ Food and beverage offerings at airports are inextricably linked to customer experience so it is really important we offer variety, quality and value. ”

From 1 July The Northern Common, Asian Kitchen, Top End Burgers, Crate and Maccinetta will progressively open, with Hectors re-opening with a new menu. In the international terminal the popular Pronto by Maccinetta will open, with The Gliding Goose opening later in the year, along with Roll’d, Red Rooster and Soul + Grain.

In Alice Springs, Café Terra Rosa will continue to trade, before undergoing a complete transformation and reopening as Discovered Café and Bar and opening later in the year along with The Blue Bilby Café.

Northern Territory Cricket and Airport Development Group (ADG) have renewed their partnership incorporating NT Cricket’sCricket 365 program .

Following the success of the pilot program in 2021, the key focus of the partnership continues to be the ADG Indigenous Cricket Program, to be held across the Darwin, Palmerston and Katherine regions, with school clinics and gala days involving young Indigenous boys and girls. The program is delivered in partnership with interstate cricketers playing in the Cricket 365 program. New Fuel Storage Facility a Step Closer

Airport Development Group (ADG) has confirmed they are a step closer to commencing construction of a new 80 megalitre diesel storage facility and fuel pipeline to be built at Darwin’s East Arm, adjacent to the existing Vopak and Crowley facilities. The East Arm location will provide direct shipping and truck access.

The proposed $60m facility, is to be jointly funded by ADG and the Australian Government, with terms and the Grant Agreement confirmed and executed. The project received $30 million funding under the Australian Government’s Boosting Australia’s Diesel Storage Program.

Construction is scheduled to commence in 2023.

Ross Baynes, ADG’s Executive General Manager Property & Terminal said the facility will provide both additional energy security for the top end of Australia as well as provide a catalyst for Territorians to access lower fuel prices. “This storage facility will ensure consistent supply, increased storage levels and competitive pricing for local industry and residents,” he said.

“The development of key industries in the Northern Territory, such as tourism, defence, aviation and mining, rely on a consistent supply of fuel and this new facility will provide that.” The new fuel facility will significantly increase commercial storage capabilities and opportunities in Darwin.

Mr Baynes said the facility presented many benefits for customers, including “a more competitive environment and secure access to this critical resource.”

ADG is also advancing an underground pipeline to connect the fuel storage facility to Darwin Airport, that would see improvements in aircraft refuelling practices, for both commercial and defence aircraft. With environmental considerations a key focus for ADG, building a facility that offers flexibility in fuel storage, including the potential use of biofuels, which could see the life of the facility extended and support the organisation in meeting its net zero emissions by 2030 target. In turn this would assist airlines and industry in meeting their own ambitious emissions reduction targets.

The facility is estimated to generate more than 100 jobs during the construction phase alone.

Mr Baynes concluded “ADG has immense confidence in the long-term future of the Northern Territory, and we will continue to invest in major projects that diversify our business and provide benefits to the local economy and our community,”

Home of the Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct

Darwin International Airport - Home of the Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct

Airport Development Group has been working with the NT Government to bring this project to fruition.

An agreement, which has 15 signatories from local and international business and industry groups, will see Darwin become the home of amphibian aircraft manufacturing in Australia, with Amphibian Aerospace Industries Pty Ltd (AAI) as the anchor tenant.

20 hectares at Darwin Airport have been allocated for the manufacturing precinct, which will include purpose-built hangars and space for supply chain businesses to co-locate and meet any need for long term expansion.

Featuring Larrakia traditional owner Edwin Fejo and accompanied by Alviston Wunungmurra on the didgeridoo, these videos have been created in collaboration with The Youth Mill, a Darwin-based organisation who support awareness and preservation of culture and identity.

World Class Tropical Resort in Darwin

Airport Development Group has invested $25 million into transforming the Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort into a world class destination.

General Manager Erich Friedl shares updates on the completion of 6 bespoke pool villas and plans are underway for 28 new deluxe rooms, 12 suites and a lagoon pool.

In early 2021 Airport Development Group (ADG) acquired the Mercure Airport Resort and Novotel Airport Hotel and a major refurbishment commenced immediately.

Uniting the properties into a single resort is a major focus, along with significant upgrades to the existing accommodation and facades, and the addition of a new lagoon pool, poolside restaurant and extensive new tropical gardens. Indigenous artwork will provide inspiration for the interiors and external facades. NT Airports CEO Tony Edmondstone said “This investment demonstrates the confidence we have in the long-term future of tourism in the Territory.” Work on the property is expected to continue into 2022.

Landscaping Masterplan for Darwin Airport

As custodians of more than 4,000 hectares of land, ADG's partnerships with local Indigenous groups and adherence to all environmental legislation and policies ensure our land is effectively managed and protected.

As part of our commitment to protecting land around our airports, a Landscape Masterplan has been developed for Darwin Airport to provide a blueprint to guide landscaping across the precinct area for current and future development to 2031.

We are excited to confirm local landscape design company CLOUSTON Associates has been awarded the tender to develop the Masterplan. Director Tony Cox is pictured on-site with ADG Environment & Sustainability Manager Nick Fewster.

We will also be working with City of Darwin to make the entry to our city full of colour and transform it into a welcoming, nature-rich, and climate-responsive green space.

Restart of International Travel to London

On Monday 1 November international travel recommenced with the first non-stop commercial flight operated by Qantas departing for London from Darwin International Airport.

An event to celebrate the flight was attended by the Administrator of the Northern Territory Vicki O’Halloran, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce and Group Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Tully (via link), NT Minister for Tourism Natasha Fyles and Airport Development Group (ADG) Acting CEO Tom Ganley. The non-stop flight takes just 17 hours and 20 minutes to arrive in London and Qantas has confirmed the Darwin to London route will operate up to 5 times a week until April 2022.

Airport Emergency Exercise

Darwin International Airport has a unique Joint User deed with the Department of Defence, which has been in place since 1998. The airport is required to undertake an Airport Emergency Exercise every 2 years to meet Federal Airport legislation, and test and assess their Aerodrome emergency Plan (AEP) with all responsible agencies.

2021 Exercise Hornet’s Nest had more than 80 personnel, contractors and volunteers take part in the simulated exercise.
Teams from Air Traffic control, RAAF 13 SQN, Aviation Rescue & Fire Fighting Service, NT Police, NT Fire and Rescue Service, St. John Ambulance, NT Emergency Services, Australian Red Cross, Australian Federal Police all took part.

Airport Development Group Executive General Manager Operations Rob Porter advised the Exercise would highlight any gaps in the Emergency Plan, clarify roles and responsibilities, improve inter-agency coordination, create greater awareness and improve individual competency.

‘It is vitally important the aerodrome remains safe. We have 100 percent focus on the safety of people that come and go from this airport and it’s really important we test our plans and test our response to any kind of aviation emergency,’ he said.

‘ Darwin airport is prepared for growth: we’re ready so that when people are able to freely move around the country post covid, we are good to go.”

He said the two-hour simulation had been ‘absolutely outstanding’ and everyone was pleased with the response. ‘It’s about co-ordination, communication and working more closely together.’
