Star Creation

An old man put a log on the fire and saw white ants coming out. He pointed it up to the sky and blew to get the white ants out. He blew so hard the white ants became filaments, which then became stars. Where he was pointing the didge became a black hole in our galaxies where our stars are formed.

The Rainbow Serpent

In the beginning when everything was dark and there was only light and sound. The Rainbow Serpent came and created the features of the land. He travelled through this country creating beautiful landscapes such as the Nightcliff Cliffs and the Darwin Harbour. Spiritual beings showed the people how to connect to country through smoking ceremonies. The medicine leaves of the iron bark bush is one of the plants used for this, another is called Lawara.

Kenbi Kenbi

Kenbi Kenbi is a significant dreaming track. It exists physically both under the ground and under the sea. It moves very slowly and acts like the lymphatic system of the earth. This describes the connection between people, land and the spirit world.

Spiritual and physical beings, such as mermaids, bamboo and dangalaba (crocodile), travel along the dreaming track. Darriba/ Nungalinya (a spiritual being) sits down where the dreaming tracks/water comes up at the surface. Dangalaba’s companion Ngartba Ngartba (a frog) sits down with Nungalinya keeping him company while his wife, the ibis, flies up and down the sand dunes.

Gurambai Creation

Rapid Creek Creation

Ngartba Ngartba and Redclaw Yabby

Dariba/Nungalinya (a spiritual being) was travelling across the country with his two wives. He came through the Black Jungle and stopped at the rain point near the Marrara swamp. From there he created Gurambai creek on the way to his resting place of the coast of the Dripstone Cliffs.

Where he touched down, lilies spring up and the home of Ngartba Ngartba (a frog) and Redclaw Yabby were created giving life to the creek.
