Airport Development Group Welcomes Commonwealth Agency Visit to the Northern Territory
Airport Development Group (ADG) has welcomed senior Commonwealth Government representatives to the Northern Territory last week as part of a series of site visits and strategic discussions focused on the future growth and development of the Territory's aviation, tourism, Defence, and economic infrastructure.
Senior executives from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DITRDCSA) recently visited Alice Springs Airport, gaining first-hand insight into the airport’s essential role in strengthening regional connectivity, tourism and economic development across Central Australia.
The delegation then travelled to Darwin International Airport, where they met with ADG executives and inspected key precinct infrastructure, including airside operations and the shared‑use runway.
The visit highlighted the partnership arrangements that exist at Darwin International Airport under the Airports Act, with Airport Development Group operating under a long-term lease from the Commonwealth. The Department of Defence and ADG share responsibility for runway and taxiway as part of the joint-user area, while DITRDCSA maintains oversight of the leased airport estate.
The delegation was provided with a comprehensive overview of ADG's ongoing investments and future plans across its Northern Territory airport network, including Darwin International Airport, Alice Springs Airport and Tennant Creek Airport, as well as the continued development of Darwin Airport Resorts.
Airport Development Group Chief Executive Officer,
Tony Edmondstone said the visit was an important opportunity to demonstrate the significant role airports play in supporting the Territory's economic future.
We were delighted to welcome senior Commonwealth representatives to both Alice Springs and Darwin and showcase the work being undertaken across our airport network.
"We were delighted to welcome senior Commonwealth representatives to both Alice Springs and Darwin and showcase the work being undertaken across our airport network."
"Our airports are much more than transport infrastructure. They are economic gateways that facilitate tourism, trade, defence operations, investment and regional development across the Northern Territory."
"These visits provided an opportunity to demonstrate the substantial investment being made by Airport Development Group and to discuss future opportunities that will support economic growth, enhance connectivity and strengthen the Territory's position as Australia's northern gateway."
Mr Edmonstone said the opportunity to host representatives from both DITRDCSA and Department of Defence at Darwin International Airport was particularly valuable given the strategic importance of the airport's joint-user arrangements.
"The relationship between the Commonwealth, Defence and Airport Development Group is critical to ensuring the long-term success of Darwin International Airport and the broader airport precinct."
"We appreciated the opportunity to share our vision for future growth and to showcase the significant economic development activities taking place across the precinct, including aviation, tourism, accommodation, logistics and commercial investment opportunities."
The delegation also toured Darwin Airport Resorts, which continues to play an important role in supporting business, government, defence personnel, sporting groups, and visitors travelling to the Top End.
Airport Development Group thanked the visiting officials for their engagement and looks forward to continuing its strong partnership with the Commonwealth to support the sustainable growth of Northern Australia.
